The Right Insect Repellent

Preventing Zika virus infection is to minimize mosquito bites. Common-sense measures to reduce bites include wearing long-sleeved shirts and long pants and keeping windows closed or screened to prevent mosquitoes from entering the home.

EPA-registered mosquito repellents. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) recommends using an Environmental Protection Agency (EPA)-registered mosquito repellent (Table). These repellents have been shown to be safe and effective and also are considered safe in pregnant and breastfeeding women. In addition, most of them are considered safe for children 2 months of age or older. Lemon eucalyptus oil products are typically not recommended for use in children younger than 3 years.[2-4] For children under 2 months of age, an infant carrier can be covered with netting to shield against mosquitoes.[3]In Canada, the use of picaridin products in children under 6 months of age is not recommended.[5]

An important caveat in understanding the effectiveness of mosquito repellents is that higher-concentration products are not necessarily more effective; however, higher concentrations typically result in a longer duration of protection. Manufacturers often estimate the protection time provided, but these estimates may not be supported by reliable evidence.

Permethrin is recommended as an insect repellent for application to clothing and gear, such as pants, socks, boots, backpacks, and tents. Permethrin-treated items should retain mosquito repellent properties through several washings.[3] Although approved by the US Food and Drug Administration for topical use as a scabicide, permethrin should not be applied to the skin as an insect repellent.

Natural mosquito repellants. A variety of natural mosquito repellants that are not registered by the EPA are on the market. People often turn to these products with the assumption that they are safer than other products. However, these products may not work as well as EPA-registered products, or they may have unknown safety or effectiveness when applied to the skin. Natural plant oils, such as citronella oil, cedar oil, geranium oil (or geraniol), and lemongrass oil, are not generally recommended for reliable protection against mosquitoes. In fact, a test by Consumer Reports found that products containing one or more of these ingredients provided protection for only up to 1 hour or not at all.[7] Products including vitamin B1 or garlic, wristbands, and ultrasonic devices are also not recommended owing to a lack of supporting evidence.

Application dos and don'ts. To maximize the safe and effective use of repellents:

  • Don't apply repellents underneath clothing or over wounds or irritated skin.

  • Don't spray repellents on the face; instead, spray onto hands and then rub onto the face. Avoid contact with the eyes or mouth.

  • Don't let young children apply repellents.

  • Reapply the repellent if mosquito bites occur after the first application; in some cases, use of a different type of repellent may be needed.

  • Keep in mind that low-concentration repellents (eg, DEET 10%) may only provide protection for 1-2 hours.

    Play outside yet stay protected!

Paying yourself first in important IF you want to save money.
Paying yourself first with TIME is also important.
Here is an analogy for planning your time.
Big rocks in first.
So spent the first hour of your day taking care of your vessel. Physical exercise, spiritual mindfulness, nutrition, physical hygiene, etc.
You will need a strong and healthy vessel to spend the 2nd hour on your latest project.
Spending time in advance on meal preparation is also important.
Then use the remaining time of your day for fb,Twitter, Snapchat, and Instagram.

Break Time into whatever pieces you want and spend it on whatever you want.  But remember time is not money.  Time is far more important than money.  You will never be able to borrow back the time you carelessly spend. Once it is spent it is gone!  And mortgaging your present TIME in hopes of time later(I’ll do it when I retire…) Is like a failed investment. 

So Take that 2 week trip now, then allow some of the less important things to remain undone until you return.  Pay yourself first with your time and let the little things fit in where they can!

Recipe for some Probiotics

Pineapple
Sauerkraut with Ginger and Turmeric
Yields 2

Ingredients
1.                    
1/2 to 1 whole cabbage, shredded or
chopped
2.                    
1 pineapple, cored and diced
3.                    
Ginger (I used about a 3 inch knob, cut
into chunks)
4.                    
Turmeric (2 tsp powdered turmeric.
Could sub for fresh turmeric as well)
5.                    
2 tbsp Sea salt
6.                    
Filtered water
7.                    
culture starter
or whey
Instructions
1.                    
Chop cabbage and add to large bowl with
sea salt. Toss.
2.                    
Peel and chop ginger. Add to cabbage.
3.                    
Peel, core and dice pineapple. Add to
cabbage mixture.
4.                    
Add turmeric.
5.                    
Toss well.
6.                    
Add culture starter or whey, if using
and toss.
7.                    
Pack into clean quart size mason jars.
Leave 1 inch of headspace.
8.                    
Fill with filtered water, if necessary.
9.                    
Be sure kraut is below the water line.
Use a weight if necessary.
10.                
Cap and leave at room temperature 5-7
days.
11.                
Taste and if it is to your liking,
transfer to the refrigerator and eat within 4-6 months.

Are you Resilient?


Perception is key to resilience: Do you conceptualize an event as traumatic, or as a chance to learn and grow?
Whether you can be said to have it or not largely depends not on any particular psychological test but on the way your life unfolds. If you are lucky enough to never experience any sort of adversity, we won’t know how resilient you are. It’s only when you’re faced with obstacles, stress, and other environmental threats that resilience, or the lack of it, emerges: Do you succumb or do you surmount?
Environmental threats can come in various guises. Some are the result of low socioeconomic status and challenging home conditions. (Those are the threats studied in Garmezy’s work.) Often, such threatsparents with psychological or other problems; exposure to violence or poor treatment; being a child of problematic divorce—are chronic. Other threats are acute: experiencing or witnessing a traumatic violent encounter, for example, or being in an accident. What matters is the intensity and the duration of the stressor. In the case of acute stressors, the intensity is usually high. The stress resulting from chronic adversity, might be lower—but it “exerts repeated and cumulative impact on resources and adaptation and persists for many months and typically considerably longer.”

Several elements predicted resilience. Some elements had to do with luck: a resilient child might have a strong bond with a supportive caregiver, parent, teacher, or other mentor-like figure. But another, quite large set of elements was psychological, and had to do with how the children responded to the environment. From a young age, resilient children tended to “meet the world on their own terms.” They were autonomous and independent, would seek out new experiences, and had a “positive social orientation.” “Though not especially gifted, these children used whatever skills they had effectively,” Werner wrote. Perhaps most importantly, the resilient children had what psychologists call an “internal locus of control”: they believed that they, and not their circumstances, affected their achievements. The resilient children saw themselves as the orchestrators of their own fates. 

One of the central elements of resilience, is perception: Do you conceptualize an event as traumatic, or as an opportunity to learn and grow?  Events are not traumatic until we experience them as traumatic,To call something a ‘traumatic event’ belies that fact. There has been coined a different term: PTE, or potentially traumatic event, which he argues is more accurate. The theory is straightforward. Every frightening event, no matter how negative it might seem from the sidelines, has the potential to be traumatic or not to the person experiencing it. 


Frame adversity as a challenge, and you become more flexible and able to deal with it, move on, learn from it, and grow. Focus on it, frame it as a threat, and a potentially traumatic event becomes an enduring problem; you become more inflexible, and more likely to be negatively affected.

  • Elevated LDL cholesterol (or total cholesterol ≥ 240 mg/dL) or low HDL cholesterol: component of metabolic syndrome

  • Diabetes mellitus: component of metabolic syndrome

  • Obesity (BMI ≥ 30 kg/m2): component of metabolic syndrome

  • Age > 55 years for men or > 65 years for women: increased risk begins at the respective ages; the Adult Treatment Panel III used earlier age cutpoints to suggest the need for earlier action

  • Estimated glomerular filtration rate <60 mL/min per 1.73 m2

  • Microalbuminuria

  • Family history of premature cardiovascular disease (men < 55 years; women < 65 years)

  • Lack of exercise
